Ramkhelawan Sherwan Rajiv: A Transformational Year of Leadership in 2022
In 2022, Ramkhelawan Sherwan Rajiv stepped into the role of JCI Urban Local President, embarking on a year that would push him beyond his limits and reshape his personal and professional journey. Describing the experience, Sherwan reflects: “As Local President in 2022, I had the opportunity to experience a year filled with personal growth and development by stepping out of my comfort zone.”
Throughout the challenges of the role, Sherwan embraced every opportunity to lead, supported by a strong network. “I was fortunate to have the guidance of Immediate Past President Nicole Pawirodirjo and the incredible support of Vice President Mehzabeen Ramsaroep. Their collaboration was key to a successful and impactful year,” he shares.
This leadership experience helped Sherwan develop resilience, adaptability, and the ability to lead with purpose. “I’m not the same Sherwan I was before. Growth isn’t easy, but JCI Urban gave me a platform to challenge myself, step into leadership, and evolve,” he says. His journey also inspired him to pursue a Master’s degree, fulfilling both a personal aspiration and a wish from his mother.
Sherwan's most memorable moments include the Chain Transfer Ceremony during the Year-End Closing event, his participation at the National Convention (NatCon) in Torarica, and the launch of the Mural Project in his hometown, Lelydorp. “These were not just events—they were milestones of connection, community, and personal pride,” he recalls.
Looking back, Sherwan proudly says: “Joining JCI Urban is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It connected me with dynamic, passionate people and gave me a space to grow and contribute meaningfully.”
To current and future JCI Urban members, his advice is full of passion and encouragement:
“Embrace the journey with an open mind. JCI Urban is more than an organization—it’s a platform for transformation. Step out of your comfort zone, take on challenges, and say yes to growth. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and push you forward.”
He concludes with the quote that guided his year: “The future depends on what you do today.” And for Sherwan, that future looks brighter than ever, thanks to a year of service, self-discovery, and strong leadership with JCI Urban 💚💙.

On August 5, 2022, the SDG murals in Lelydorp were officially launched in a celebratory event that highlighted the importance of sustainable development and youth involvement. The unveiling took place in the presence of Her Excellency Melissa Santokhi, First Lady of the Republic of Suriname, alongside District Commissioner of Wanica Zuid-Oost Shafiek Goelaman, JCI Urban Local President Sherwan Ramkhelawan, Chair of the Lelydorp Sportbond Revelino Haselhoef, and UN Suriname representative Adley Breeveld.
The murals serve as a vibrant and visual reminder of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aim to inspire the community, especially young people, to take ownership of the global goals at a local level. This initiative was yet another example of how collaboration between community leaders, government, and organizations like JCI can turn awareness into lasting impact.
In 2022, JCI Urban reclaimed the Syma Quiz Champions title, marking another proud moment for the chapter. The winning team featured Observer Pudja Bhagwat, Fellow Cathleen Kajensi, and Fellow Solange Sordam. They were expertly coached by Vice President Mehzabeen Ramsaroep.
