Building on the foundation of growth and empowerment from previous years, the 2018 theme "Unite to Impact" emphasized the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change. JCI Urban recognized that real, lasting impact is only possible when individuals, organizations, and communities come together with a shared vision.
Through united efforts — such as the U&U Green Rally with JCI Unify and the nationwide World Cleanup Day with corporate volunteers — JCI Urban demonstrated that working together multiplies reach and deepens results. Whether partnering across sectors or strengthening internal bonds, 2018 was a year where unity became a driving force for action, innovation, and measurable community development.
On September 15, in recognition of World Cleanup Day, JCI Urban mobilized volunteers and partnered with key environmental organizations to make a tangible impact in Suriname. In collaboration with Stichting Support Recycling Suriname and Green Heritage Fund Suriname, JCI Urban coordinated a major cleanup at Weg naar Zee, specifically targeting the Brantimakaweg area. Simultaneously, cleanup efforts were also carried out at prominent locations such as Waterkant in Albina, Zeedijk in Nickerie, and Waterkant in Paramaribo.
This initiative, held under the Corporate Volunteers program, encouraged companies with active CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policies—such as Fernandes Bottling Company Suriname and De Surinaamse Brouwerij—to send their staff as volunteers. Their participation not only reinforced community collaboration but also amplified the project’s reach and impact.
By taking part in this global movement, JCI Urban contributed to the advancement of 8 out of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, including responsible consumption, climate action, and partnerships for the goals. The project is a clear reflection of JCI’s Active Citizen Framework, turning awareness into action and demonstrating the power of community-driven environmental stewardship.
In 2016, JCI Urban and JCI Unify joined forces to execute their first twinning project: the U&U Green Rally, a dynamic collaboration with the Surinaamse Auto Rally Klub (SARK). This innovative event fused fun, awareness, and community engagement, while promoting sustainability and strengthening the bonds between both LOMs. The project featured two components: a competitive rally and engaging JCI retention activities aimed at increasing visibility and participation.
The rally commenced in Lelydorp, a strategic move to amplify JCI Urban’s local presence. Participants embarked on a mission-driven course where they collected bottles, glass, and plastic as part of the rally challenge—promoting environmental responsibility in a fun and interactive way. The race concluded at the OWOS retreat, where awards were handed out, and rally-goers engaged in JCI-themed retention activities to learn more about the organization's mission and impact.
To maximize impact and fundraising, the rally was launched during the Pasar Lely Sunday market—an initiative by Marvin Ramtahalsingh to support local entrepreneurs. The vibrant launch, held in front of the G.R. Singh-Rooslaan store, attracted market-goers and curious onlookers, offering excellent exposure for both JCI Urban and JCI Unify. Fundraising efforts included the sale of six Green Ambassadors puzzles, and the event brought in modest profits shared evenly between the two chapters.
The project successfully met several goals:
Strengthening member relations within and between the two chapters through joint participation.
Forming strategic partnerships with businesses and organizations, including SARK and local entrepreneurs.
Raising awareness of JCI Suriname and both LOMs through on-site engagement and social media outreach.
Generating funds to support future projects.
Sparking interest among the public, especially in rallying and environmental initiatives, laying the groundwork for future recruitment.
The U&U Green Rally showcased the power of collaboration, creativity, and community connection—all while nurturing the spirit of active citizenship and sustainable action.
At the 2018 National Convention, JCI Urban was proudly recognized for its impactful initiatives and strong partnerships. The chapter received two prestigious awards:
Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program – awarded for the successful execution of the World Cleanup Day and Corporate Volunteers Project, which highlighted JCI Urban’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement through collaborative action with local companies and NGOs.
Best Inter-Organization Collaboration Project – awarded for the U&U Green Rally, a joint effort with JCI Unify, which not only strengthened ties between the two chapters but also raised environmental awareness and showcased the power of unity in driving community impact.
These recognitions underscored JCI Urban’s dedication to sustainable development, active citizenship, and meaningful partnerships.
The Hub has a strategy focused on offering accessible opportunities for children and youth in the areas of sports, homework guidance, studying, and library activities. Starting from October 1, students were able to visit The Hub for:
study research,
focused studying,
homework guidance,
thesis/paper screening.
All these services were part of the project “The Student Study Hub (TSSH)”. As part of this initiative, The Hub collaborated with JCI Urban to organize Youth Empowerment Weeks (YEW). During these weeks, TSSH was promoted, and JCI focused on student outreach and on raising awareness about The Hub as a valuable resource. The aim was to encourage students to regularly visit The Hub to borrow books and use the space for studying.
The YEW served as a promotional campaign to highlight the benefits of TSSH and to inspire students to make the most of their academic year.
