The 2015 theme "Unite Strengths to Nourish the Growing Plant" represents the next vital phase in JCI Urban’s journey—consolidating growth through collaboration, empowerment, and shared purpose. JCI Urban calls on members, partners, and the wider community to work together—combining talents, experiences, and resources—to nurture what has been started. Just as a growing plant needs consistent care, sunlight, and strong roots, JCI Urban recognized that continued growth requires shared vision, mentorship, and collective action. This theme underscored the value of teamwork and synergy to strengthen the organization and amplify its positive impact on Suriname's society.
In 2015, JCI celebrated a historic milestone — 100 years of global impact in developing young leaders and creating positive change. To mark this centennial, an official anniversary logo was released internationally, symbolizing a century of dedication to active citizenship, community service, and youth empowerment across the world.
The Lelydorp sports hall, built over 30 years ago, plays a vital role in the physical education of approximately 1,500 students from four surrounding schools: Kaykoesy School (LBO), Johannes Vrolijk School (MULO), Mulo Schotelweg (MULO), and Natin Lelydorp (MBO). Due to its deteriorated condition, students are currently unable to participate in essential indoor sports such as basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and more — all of which are part of the national curriculum.
In addition to schools, local sports organizations — including volleyball clubs, aerobics and fitness groups, dance schools, basketball clubs, yoga groups, and martial arts programs like Taekwondo and Karate — have also been forced to seek other venues. Despite this setback, the facility holds great potential to once again serve as a central hub for both education and community wellness.
Project Rationale and Goal
The urgent need for safe and adequate sports accommodation in Lelydorp’s school community is the driving force behind this project. The primary goal is to fully renovate the sports venue to meet current standards, ensuring that students can resume their physical education activities and that the broader community can benefit from a functional and inclusive sports facility.
Due to national economic developments, the project was put on hold.
On December 12, 2015, JCI Urban and JCI Unify proudly co-hosted the JCI Suriname Year End Closing (YEC) at the scenic location of Boropasi in Lelydorp. This marked the first official collaboration between the two chapters and was a meaningful choice, as the 2015 National President, Rajiv Hieralal—one of JCI Urban’s founding members—has his roots in JCI Unify. Their joint effort symbolized unity, growth, and shared commitment to JCI's mission in Suriname.
The Year End Closing is a beloved annual tradition on the JCI Suriname calendar. It celebrates the achievements of all Local Organizations (LOMs) over the past year and fosters camaraderie among members, senators, and guests. It’s a moment to reflect on the progress made, honor those who have served, and build anticipation for the year ahead. The evening also features the symbolic chain transfer, marking the installation of new national and local board members.
By selecting Boropasi in Lelydorp—the heart of JCI Urban’s operations—as the event location, the organizing team ensured a memorable and meaningful experience. The success of the 2015 YEC not only reinforced the importance of collaboration between LOMs but also showcased the leadership and organizational strength that JCI Urban and JCI Unify bring to the national stage.
